How to choose the right Personal Trainer for you

Personal Training has now become increasingly popular both in and out of gyms as people chose to get structured advice and assistance in reaching their goals. Due to the increase in demand there are now a wide variety of trainers to choose from Each one will have their own style depending on their course of study, experience and the methods they use. Here are some things to think of when choosing the right trainer for you;

Work out what you want

Firstly, it’s a great idea to really understand what it is you want from your training. Some trainers specialise in certain areas e.g. sports specific training, weight loss, core strength, pre and post natal and the list goes on. If you have a specific area of need then you may want to find a trainer that specializes in that area.

Rapport

Find someone you feel that you click with and that you can trust. Your gut instinct and intuition will be your best tools here, especially when you first speak to or meet your trainer. You will look forward to and get the most out of your sessions if you are comfortable with your trainer and happy to ask them any questions and to let them know how you’re finding the training. Find a down to earth trainer that you really get on with. You need to enjoy spending time with them because they may just become a vital part of your life!

Check out their qualifications

All professional personal trainers have formal qualifications gained through an established course. In New Zealand the body at oversees and monitors the quality of trainers is REPS the Register of Exercise Professionals. All professional trainers will be registered with REPS which means that they meet ongoing requirements such as keeping up to date with their skills and experience. Don’t be afraid to you ask any potential trainers whether they are REPS registered and how long they have been so. Find out where they studied and what was involved so you can ensure that you’re getting the best advice.

What style of training do they use?

The style of training will often relate back to the qualifications your coach holds. Do their methodologies sit well with you? All trainers will have their own personal philosophy on training, health and wellbeing. Ask your potential trainer what theirs is and see how it sits with you. Check when they completed their studies and how have they updated their knowledge since then?  As training theory and best practice is constantly evolving you want to ensure you are working with someone who is best equipped to be able to keep you safe and get you good results.

What do others say?

Qualifications and training can only go so far and the proof is often in the pudding. The enthusiasm, passion, skill and personal experience that each trainer brings is what really determines the quality of the service you will receive. So go straight to the horse’s mouth and see testimonials from clients that your potential trainer has recently worked with. If possible you could even ask to speak to a couple of clients that the trainer could put you on to, so that you can ask questions directly.

At the end of the day, trust your instinct and you will no doubt find a great trainer. And, if for any reason you are not satisfied then discuss your concerns with them as they may be able to recommend someone who is better suited for you.
